The Google launched Knol knowledge platform http://knol.google.com celebrating in a few days of their first six-month anniversary. Laut Google soll Knol zur Wissensverbreitung und als Informationsquelle im Internet dienen. Im Gegensatz zu Wikipedia, das auf die "Weisheit der Massen" setzt, rückt bei Knol aber eher der einzelne Autor in den Mittelpunkt. So sollen auf dem Portal vor allem Einzelautoren oder kleinere Gruppen von kooperierenden Autoren unter ihrem realen Namen Beiträge veröffentlichen. Unter dem Ansatz der sogenannten "Moderated Colalboration" kann jeder registrierte Nutzer Änderungsvorschläge zu einem bestimmten Text vorbringen. Der jeweilige Autor kann diese dann akzeptieren, ablehnen oder verändern noch bevor die neue Fassung für die Öffentlichkeit ersichtlich ist. Wie Dupont und McNatty im Blogeintrag feststellen, wird dieser Ansatz von der Knol-Autorenschaft bislang sehr gut angenommen.
